resident Prabowo Subianto, accompanied by Investment and Downstream Minister/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) head Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, attended an exclusive meeting with corporate members of the United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) in Washington, DC, on Monday. The meeting, which took place on the second day of President Prabowo’s state visit to the United States, aimed to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and the US in the fields of the economy, investment, education and defense.
During the meeting, President Prabowo emphasized the importance of American companies’ support in driving Indonesia's economic growth. He outlined his administration’s priorities, focusing on sustainable economic development, food security and investment in energy, infrastructure and education. The President underscored Indonesia’s commitment to creating a welcoming investment climate for international partners, particularly US companies.
“I am pleased with today’s discussions with leading American and global corporations. They have been integral to Indonesia’s economy and development for many years, and continue to believe in Indonesia’s economy. I encouraged them to keep investing and to play a role in our development plans,” President Prabowo told the media.
The investment minister, who accompanied the President, reaffirmed the government’s welcome to US investment in sectors including energy, technology, health care, education and infrastructure. President Prabowo’s vision, minister Roeslani said, was to accelerate economic growth through bureaucratic simplification and strict law enforcement, especially regarding corruption.
“We are committed to fully supporting American investors who wish to contribute to Indonesia’s development. The Indonesian government also stresses the importance of sustainability in investments, with a focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects and social impacts for local communities,” the minister said.
The USINDO meeting was attended by leaders from 12 major US companies with existing or potential investments in Indonesia. Ted Osius, former deputy US ambassador to Indonesia and a USINDO member, expressed his appreciation for President Prabowo’s warm reception and interest in deepening collaboration toward green economic goals and net-zero emissions in Indonesia. Several companies also voiced their commitment to supporting geothermal projects and carbon storage technology in alignment with Indonesia’s initiatives.
“In December, I will lead a delegation of US business representatives to Indonesia to explore business opportunities. The delegation will include companies from various sectors, including energy, information technology, health care, infrastructure, education, retail and finance. We are reaching out across sectors because we are highly interested in Indonesia; it is growing rapidly, with vast opportunities, and it is clear that we are very welcome there,” Osius said.
In addition to minister Roeslani, the President was accompanied at the meeting by Foreign Minister Sugiono; Deputy Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Stella Christie; Indonesia’s Charge d’Affaires in Washington, DC, Ida Bagus Made Bimantara; and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Among the participating companies were Freeport McMoRan, S&P Global, GE Healthcare, Boeing, Capital Group, BP, Exxon Mobil, Citi, Caterpillar, Chevron, the Georgetown University Indonesia Program and Purdue University.
According to BKPM data, US investment in Indonesia from 2019 to the third quarter of 2024 was US$13.41 billion, with the largest sectors being mining (73.02 percent), other services (11.93 percent) and basic metals and metal goods (4.09 percent). The top investment locations were East Java (38.13 percent), Papua (26.61 percent) and Central Papua (13.66 percent).
