n a bid to enhance transparency and support data-driven policy-making, BPJS Kesehatan officially launched its 2024 sample data on Dec. 20. This year’s sample data covers general health, diabetes mellitus, tuberculosis, maternal and child health, and, for the first time, mental health.

BPJS Kesehatan president director Ghufron Mukti emphasized that the organization’s big data plays a critical role in the implementation of the National Health Insurance (JKN) program. It supports planning, budgeting, implementation, program evaluation and performance measurement. To facilitate data processing for researchers, academics, practitioners and other stakeholders, BPJS Kesehatan has structured the sample data to represent the broader data managed by the institution.

“Our data is an asset that can be utilized for research and evidence-based policy-making in the JKN program. These sample datasets support analysis and form the basis for adequate policy decisions for the JKN program,” Ghufron stated.

BPJS Kesehatan’s director of information technology, Edwin Aristiawan, highlighted the significant growth in sample data over the years. In 2019, 4.4 million data rows were released, which increased to 82.3 million in 2023. For 2024, an additional 20.4 million data rows have been included, bringing the total to 102 million. This comprises 49.1 million general health data points, 26.6 million on diabetes mellitus, 6.6 million on tuberculosis, 14.7 million on maternal and child health, and 6.1 million on mental health.

Edwin also detailed the four-step process for public access to the data. First, users must visit the JKN Data Portal at [https://data.bpjs-kesehatan.go.id/](https://data.bpjs-kesehatan.go.id/). Before logging in, users must register an account to access the required data, ensuring data transactions are monitored and comply with regulatory data governance.

“Next, users complete a submission form detailing their data access requirements, the type of sample data needed, a brief description, institutional affiliation, identification and an integrity pact. Once submitted, the data will be automatically sent to the registered email address of the applicant,” Edwin explained.

National Social Security Council (DJSN) chair Nunung Nuryanto acknowledged BPJS Kesehatan’s strategic role as the administrator of the JKN program, which has served Indonesia’s population for over a decade. Currently, over 278 million people, more than 98 percent of the population, are enrolled in the program.

“Data is a strategic asset integral to the implementation of the JKN program. The potential of JKN’s big data is immense, making its management crucial. If BPJS Kesehatan’s hundreds of millions of service data points are optimized while prioritizing data security, they can significantly enhance health research ecosystems. The sample data can also benefit decision-makers, academics and other stakeholders in fostering innovation and ensuring the sustainability of the JKN program,” Nunung concluded.
