President Prabowo Subianto posted a video of his phone call with Donald Trump, during a working visit to Washington, DC, saying that he was willing to travel to Florida to meet the president-elect in person amid an ongoing effort to solidify his American rapport.

"It's nearly ready," Gonzalo Rios, deputy general manager of the Peruvian subsidiary of Chinese port operator Cosco Shipping, which has a 60 percent stake in the facility, said during a recent visit to the deep-water port.

China and the Philippines have sparred repeatedly this year over disputed areas of the South China Sea, including the Scarborough Shoal, one of Asia's most contested features.

Prabowo, who has said he will pursue a non-aligned foreign policy, posted a video of his call to Trump made after he arrived from China, where he had met with President Xi Jinping on his first overseas trip since taking office last month.

Its line is around Scarborough Shoal, the South China Sea feature that lies within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

Rubio has notably hawkish views on China, which he sees as a threat and challenge to US economic and military might.

The joint exercise, which started last week, came as newly inaugurated President Prabowo Subianto pledged closer ties with Russia on defence, in a bid to forge links with any country as part of Jakarta's long-held non-aligned foreign policy.

On Saturday, Prabowo met Chinese President Xi Jinping, the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

President Prabowo Subianto ended his state visit to China on Sunday and left directly for the United States as his administration seeks to maintain balanced ties with the two rival powers.

The Gulf country has been working alongside the United States and Egypt for months on fruitless talks between the warring sides in Gaza and any disengagement from that process could further complicate efforts to reach a deal.

Stable, sound and sustainable China-US relations serve the interests of both, Xi said on Thursday, adding that the international community would expect the two powers to "respect each other (and) co-exist peacefully".

The end of his fractious three-way coalition, which deprives him of a governing majority, could not have come at a worse time for Europe's biggest economy, which is set to shrink for a second year in a row.
