President Prabowo Subianto congratulated Donald Trump for his sweeping victory in the United States presidential election on Wednesday, hoping for a closer partnership in the future especially in ensuring global peace and stability.

For Indonesian citizens living in the US, like other groups that have no say in the US election, one major hope was that the overall relationship between their country and the US could improve going forward.

Republicans also won several races that could allow them to expand their 220-212 majority in the House of Representatives, though the final outcome may not be known for days.

Trump's early wins included the predictably Republican Florida and Texas while Harris won California, giving Trump 227 electoral votes and Harris 172. The magic number to win the presidency is 270.

The early results were as anticipated, with the contest expected to come down to seven swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Opinion polls showed the rivals neck and neck in all seven going into Election Day.
