ndonesia’s top security minister has urged all sides in the Middle East’s rapidly escalating conflict to “return to the negotiating table” and pursue a permanent resolution, following the United States’ strike on three Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday, while Indonesian diplomats raced to rescue citizens from danger zones.

Jakarta continues to monitor the situation in Iran closely as it prepares for contingency plans during the evacuation period, Coordinating Political and Security Affairs Minister Budi Gunawan said in a statement on Monday.

“President Prabowo [Subianto] prioritizes the protection of Indonesian citizens in Middle Eastern countries and will immediately prepare for contingency and evacuation plans. [...] The government encourages all parties to return to the negotiation table to achieve a permanent resolution to the conflict,” Budi’s statement read.

Prabowo has not issued a statement regarding the escalation since his visit to Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin.

Speaking in Washington, US President Donald Trump on Sunday said he greenlit a series of attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites, despite political divisions in Washington and Tehran’s previous warning that any US military involvement would only cause "irreparable damage”.

The US attack involved over 125 American military aircraft, according to the Pentagon, and has sparked widespread anger in Tehran as government officials pledge self-defense and civilians flock by the thousands to the streets in protest, as reported by AFP.
