mbattled Papua Governor and graft suspect Lukas Enembe has skipped another summons in a corruption probe while the Democratic Party has suspended him from its provincial leadership.
In a press statement delivered on Wednesday, Dem chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono said Lukas had been relieved of his duties as the head of the party’s Papua chapter.
"We respect and fully support the ongoing legal proceedings," Agus said. "We only ask that the law be enforced fairly. Don't politicize [the case]."
Lukas, despite a lengthy list of controversies, has had a long-lasting presence in Papuan politics, keeping his political allies in Jakarta appeased while also commanding the respect of many local factions operating in the region.
Some observers have speculated that the redistricting of Papua province was partly aimed at curtailing his influence in the region and that national and regional elites had colluded in the process to facilitate the exploitation of the region’s natural resources.
Second summons
Lukas failed to show up for questioning at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headquarters in Jakarta for a second time on Monday after he missed his first summons on Sept. 12 – both times citing health problems.
