The Group of 20 (G20) sherpas gather for the fourth meeting on Nov. 11-14 in Jimbaran, Bali with an aim of endorsing concrete deliverables for addressing global-food insecurity and the energy crisis. This, according to the Office of Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister, is expected to become the legacy of Indonesia’s G20 presidency.
The 4th sherpa meeting is also their last meeting before the G20 Leaders' Summit on Tuesday and Wednesday in Nusa Dua.
"It's undeniable that the crises the world is facing are full of risks and challenges,” Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto said, when welcoming delegates from G20 members virtually to the sherpa meeting, as quoted from a press release on Sunday. “Therefore, leaders of [the G20 major economies] are counting on you for wisdom, solutions and innovation for global economic recovery.”
Airlangga said that, as a representative of developing countries and the only G20 member from Southeast Asia, Indonesia was putting inclusivity at the forefront of its G20 agenda, adding that all members should help each other through difficult times.
“With the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as our guideline, we must consider the most effective solutions to the ongoing multidimensional crises,” he said.
Indonesia's presidency of the G20 this year has been overshadowed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the resulting global food and energy crisis.
But hopes are high that there will be a breakthrough in talks at the Summit that will ease some of the tensions over the war in Ukraine and other undercurrents of conflict, especially following the confirmation that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be in attendance.
