American dies on birthday trek on Mount Agung

Fifty-one-year-old US-citizen Kevin Henderson died on Mount Agung in Karangasem, Bali, after falling on a climb to celebrate his birthday, local authorities reported.

ifty-one-year-old United States citizen Kevin Henderson died on Mount Agung in Karangasem, Bali, after falling on a climb to celebrate his birthday, local authorities reported.

National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Bali chapter-coordinator Gede Darmada said that the victim fell on his way down on a sunrise trek, which started at around 11 p.m. on Thursday.

“On his way back from the summit, he slipped and got injured in the head, feet and waist,” Gede Darmada said, adding that the victim took a 25-meter fall.

The agency was notified about the incident on Friday at 9:25 a.m. and immediately dispatched a team to aid. The incident was reported to have happened at an altitude of 2,700 m above sea level.

Darmada said that the victim received emergency aid from a foreign medical worker who happened to be on a climb at the mountain. However, the victim died during the evacuation process.

Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali, is an active volcano with a summit elevation of 3,142 m above sea level.
