Indonesia Decides

The Islamic political party Gelora declared over the weekend that it would nominate chairman Anis Matta and senior politician Fahri Hamzah as presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2024 election.

In a national meeting held in Tangerang, Banten, that concluded on Sunday, the Gelora Party also unveiled its platform of aiming to propel Indonesia to become a superpower nation on par with the United States, China and Russia.

Party chairman Anis said in his speech that one of the key platforms for his candidacy was improving the country's social welfare programs to allow for Indonesia to become a superpower country.

"Indonesia can become a superpower country if every pregnant woman and the baby she carries can get enough nutrition and healthcare. We can also become a global power if we give free education to all. And these are what Gelora will be fighting for," Anis was quoted by Antara as saying.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has declared Gelora eligible to contest the 2024 general elections, joining 16 other political parties.

The party was founded by a splinter group of politicians who were formerly members of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). Anis himself was chairman of the PKS between 2013 and 2015.

Fahri, another former PKS member, served as deputy speaker of the House of Representatives between 2014 and 2016. He was known for some controversial statements, including one that cost him the deputy speakership of the House.
