Local media in the NTT provincial capital Kupang reported that government workers began streaming into their workplaces at 5 a.m. on Monday.
taff at the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Education Agency on Monday started their first day at work beginning at 5:30 a.m., one week after the same new policy was applied to high school students in the area.
Local media in the NTT provincial capital Kupang reported that government workers began streaming into their workplaces at 5 a.m. on Monday.
Head of the Kupang Education Agency, Linus Lusi, led a morning ritual of dance and prayers with local government workers.
"This is a new thing in the education sector. We begin this morning with happiness and prayer," Linus told reporters.
NTT Governor Viktor Laiskodat had issued a regulation mandating that senior high school start at 5 a.m. in an attempt to boost productivity among teachers and students.
The new policy caused uproar with education experts criticizing it as heavy handed and potentially adversely impacting on students' health as a result of sleep deprivation.
Following the controversy, Viktor allowed for a change in the policy and some schools in Kupang can now start classes at 5:30 a.m.
