ourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno urged Bali Governor Wayan Koster to reconsider a new policy to ban foreigners from renting motorbikes in an attempt to curb bad behavior from tourists.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Sandiaga said such a policy required a comprehensive study of its possible impacts on the tourist industry.
"It [motorbike rental] is the kind of business that offers employment and work opportunities," Sandiaga said.
He said that to curb tourists driving recklessly, authorities in Bali could strictly enforce traffic regulations.
"If drivers have no riding skills, or in the case that an accident happens due to drunkenness, then there should be strict law enforcement," he said.
Over the weekend, Governor Koster announced a fresh regulation banning foreign tourists from renting motorbikes to travel in Bali and only allowing them to use cars operated by tour agents on the resort island.
Koster issued the new regulation to respond to increasing cases of traffic offenses and rude behavior reported about foreigners staying on the resort island.
