A PKB board member has announced the party's decision to back the two-time presidential candidate while hinting that a deal was in the pipeline for Golkar to join the KKIR.
The National Awakening Party (PKB) has announced its decision to back Gerindra Party chairman and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto’s bid for the presidency in 2024.
Faisol Reza, a member of the PKB’s central board, made the announcement on Wednesday following a meeting in Central Jakarta, during which the party leadership also discussed the possibility of the Golkar Party joining it to nominate Prabowo.
“First and foremost, the PKB is nominating Prabowo as a presidential candidate. We should take note of this,” Faisol told a press briefing.
He said the party, which is one half of the Greater Indonesia Awakening Coalition (KKIR) with Prabowo’s Gerindra Party being the other half, was looking into the possibility of Golkar joining the electoral alliance.
Faisol said that a deal for Golkar to join the KKIR could happen in the next two months.
“Then again, the decision will be up to all leaders of the parties involved. This is their [prerogative],” he added.
Late last month, PKB chairman Muhamin Iskandar met with Prabowo amid speculation that the two had reached a deal over the vice presidential candidate.
