Indonesia Decides

Central Java Governor and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo brushed off on Tuesday a suggestion that he had signed a political contract with the leadership of the PDI-P requiring him to appoint politicians from the party to plum positions in the Cabinet.

Ganjar said after a meeting with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Tuesday that the country operated a presidential system under which the president wielded the power to form his Cabinet.

"In a presidential system any matters regarding ministerial positions are the president's prerogative, so leave it to the president," Ganjar said, as quoted by Antara state news agency.

Earlier on Sunday Ade Armando, a politician from the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), claimed that Ganjar had signed a political contract promising that he would give key ministerial positions to the PDI-P in the event he wins next year's presidential election.

Senior PDI-P politician Said Abdullah also dismissed the claim, saying that no agreement whatsoever had been struck between the ruling party and Ganjar.

"I can assure you 1,000 percent that there has been no political contract in the event Pak Ganjar becomes president," Said insisted in a statement on Tuesday.

Ade issued a correction to his original statement on Tuesday, saying that Ganjar would be independent in making decisions as to whom he would appoint as Cabinet ministers.
