Political parties are intensifying talks to finalize their electoral alliances as the deadline for the 2024 presidential election registration draws closer.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) is planning to move the registration deadline for presidential and vice-presidential candidates to mid-October from late November, forcing political parties to rush their nomination decisions.
It is currently finalizing the draft of a regulation to reschedule the registration window for presidential and vice-presidential candidates from Oct. 19 through Nov. 25 to Oct. 10-16 this year, cutting the time for candidates to register from five weeks to one.
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) matriarch Megawati Soekarnoputri is said to have held meetings with Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD and former West Java governor Ridwan Kamil in search of a running mate for the party’s presidential nominee, Ganjar Pranowo.
On Sunday, Ganjar uploaded a picture on his Instagram account, saying that he had an evening coffee with the senior minister. Mahfud, who was almost appointed President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s running mate in the 2019 election, told reporters that Ganjar was his old friend when both sat as lawmakers, adding that they only talked about their old days at the House of Representatives.
Ridwan and Mahfud are currently the strongest vice-presidential candidates for the former Central Java governor, with Megawati reportedly ruling out Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno as one of the candidates.
