ormer minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo of the NasDem Party failed to turn up for a second round of questioning as a witness in a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigation into an alleged graft case at the Agriculture Ministry, citing family affairs, as investigators intensify their probe.
Syahrul’s lawyers came to the KPK headquarters in Jakarta to inform the investigators about his absence and to request a rescheduled questioning.
“I respect the KPK, but I have to tend to my [ailing] mother first,” Syahrul said in a statement on Wednesday.
The subpoena came as the KPK interrogated more witnesses in its investigation, including two of Syarul’s former subordinates.
The KPK grilled the ministry’s secretary-general Kasdi Subagyono on Tuesday and Muhammad Hatta, an official at the agricultural infrastructure and facilities directorate general, on Monday, Kompas.com reported.
The KPK has yet to announce any suspects in the case even though previous media reports suggested that the antigraft body had named at least three suspects.
Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD said that he received information that the KPK had already named Syahrul a suspect, which the KPK has denied.
