Anies and Muhaimin becomes the first presidential and vice-presidential pair to register with the General Elections Commission (KPU) on the first day of registration.
Former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan and National Awakening Party (PKB) chief Muhaimin Iskandar officially registered as presidential and vice-presidential candidates, respectively, at the General Elections Commission (KPU) in Central Jakarta on Thursday morning, making them the first pair to register their bid.
Anies and Muhaimin arrived at the KPU headquarters at around 10 a.m. They were accompanied by representatives from the three parties of the Coalition for Change: the NasDem Party, the PKB and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
“We are offering the idea of change for Indonesian families,” Anies said during a press briefing after the registration. “We believe we will bring equality and justice whether through affordable prices of household necessities, equal opportunities for jobs, education and health.”
The pair are scheduled to undergo medical checkups at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Jakarta on Saturday, said KPU chair Hasyim Asy’ari.
Anies was the first presumptive presidential nominee to pick a running mate, naming Muhaimin on Sept. 2.
Muhaimin’s move to Anies’ camp followed a clash between him and Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto, whom he had earlier supported in the choice of running mate.
