The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued Fatwa No. 83/2023, which underlines the Israeli goods boycott as part of its obligations in supporting Palestinian independence.
he Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued Fatwa No. 83/2023 on the Law of Supporting Palestine, underscoring the obligation to support Palestine and boycott pro-Israel products.
Issued as a form of the MUI’s scholarly responsibility, the fatwa (edict) follows the emerging worldwide campaign calling for boycotts of Western brands that have been implied of supporting Israel.
MUI head of fatwa Asrorun Niam Sholeh asserted that supporting Israeli aggression, whether direct or indirect, is haram (forbidden).
Asrorun urges Muslims to refrain from transactions involving Israeli products, as well as those affiliated with Israel, colonization and Zionism.
"Supporting parties who are known to support Israeli aggression, either directly or indirectly, such as by buying products from producers who support Israeli aggression, is haram," Asrorun said on Friday.
However, Asrorun did not provide a list of affiliated brands or products to avoid.
As part of its recommendations, the fatwa encourages the government to take firm steps to assist the Palestinian cause.
