PKB chair Muhaimin, the running mate of presidential candidate Anies Baswedan, said the pair aimed to conduct a thorough review on the Preemployment Card program if they won next year's election.
Muhaimin “Cak Imin” Iskandar has promised to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the government’s Preemployment Card program if he and presidential candidate Anies Baswedan win the 2024 election.
Known locally as Kartu Prakerja, the vice presidential candidate and National Awakening Party (PKB) chair said a thorough review of the pandemic-era program was necessary, as it had failed to meet its target to provide employment for all Indonesians.
"Unfortunately, the Kartu Prakerja program has only resulted in 1 million people watching the program's YouTube content," Muhaimin said on Thursday, as quoted by Antara News.
As the program’s purpose was to provide a gateway for fresh graduates to transition into the workforce, he said part of the evaluation would involve expanding cooperation with high-profile companies to help university students majoring in finance to fulfill their compulsory internships.
"People cannot learn only by watching and taking notes, it needs to be hands-on. [The internship] doesn't have to be for long, three, four or six months are sufficient," he added.
While he was eager to evaluate the program, Muhaimin said he would leave it to prosecutors and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to probe the alleged fund misappropriation linked to the program.
Separately, Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartanto said the Kartu Prakerja program would continue next year as planned.
