he Indonesian Navy received a number of new warships and patrol boats from local shipyards as the year 2023 came to a close, amid ongoing efforts to bolster its fleet.
Navy chief of staff Adm. Muhammad Ali officiated KRI Marlin, a 60-meter fast patrol craft (PC-60), and Maritime Security Patrol (Patkamla) Jefman, a special-mission combat boat, at Batu Ampar Port in Batam, Riau Islands, on Dec. 20, 2023. The vessels were manufactured by PT Palindo Marine Batam.
“The construction of KRI Marlin-877 and Patkamla Jefman [shows] the Indonesian Navy’s commitment to supporting the government’s program to achieve independence in the defense industry and is a strategic policy to maintain the state’s sovereignty,” Ali said in a press release issued by the Navy.
The KRI Marlin was built in two years with state budget funds from 2021, 2022 and 2023. The ship’s steel cutting and keel laying ceremony, which marked the beginning of construction, was held on March 15, 2022.
The 520-tonne, 50-crew vessel, with an endurance of five days, will be deployed at the Makassar Main Naval Base (Lantamal) under the Second Fleet.
Ali said KRI Marlin was armed with a 40 mm naval gun with a remote control station that allowed it to be fired from inside the ship. It was also equipped with 12.7 mm and 7.62 mm machine guns.
The PC-60 is categorized as a Dorang-class ship, a name taken from the first ship of the class, KRI Dorang, which was constructed by another local shipyard, Caputra Mitra Sejati. Other than KRI Dorang, Caputra has delivered KRI Bawal and is working on another two vessels whose keels were laid on Dec. 9, 2022.
