East Java Police have arrested three suspects in a shooting that injured Muarah, a community leader in Sampang regency, East Java, and a volunteer for the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka campaign team.

"We, together with Sampang Police, have examined 13 people as witnesses; and named three as suspects and detained them at the East Java Police headquarters," said East Java Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Dirmanto, on Wednesday, as quoted by Liputan6.

According to the police, one of the suspects is a village head. The police conducted searches at two houses and one warehouse of the accused, led by East Java Police's director of Criminal Investigation Sr. Comr. Totok Suharyanto.

Dirmanto said the search yielded some evidence, including sharp weapons, cell phones and various other items. However, the firearm used in the shooting was still under examination by the forensic laboratory team. He refrained, however, from disclosing the motives behind the shooting by the three suspects of the Prabowo-Gibran volunteers. According to Dirmanto, no political motive had been found based on witness examinations.

"The case is still under investigation and is developing. Once completed, the details will be conveyed in a press release," he said.

Muarah was shot twice in front of a shop on Dec. 22, 2023. Following the incident, the unknown perpetrators, who were dressed in black and wore face coverings, fled on a motorcycle. The victim is still undergoing intensive care treatment at Dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya, the provincial capital of East Java.
