The Central Java KPU head proposes delaying voting in a district in Demak regency due to severe flooding.
The head of the Central Java office of the General Elections Commission (KPU), Handi Tri Ujiono, has proposed that voting for the 2024 general election be postponed in Karanganyar district, Demak regency, because of flooding in the area.
"The entire Karanganyar district would undergo later voting, within a maximum of 10 days after Feb. 14," Handi said in Semarang on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Handi said some Demak residents had also been evacuated to the neighboring Kudus regency, making it difficult to manage the voting process.
"The [balloting materials for the area] are safe, still in the regency warehouse," he said.
Handi added that 123 polling stations in Karanganyar had been flooded while the remaining 60 were unaffected.
“The polling stations not affected by flooding, however, are being used as evacuation centers,” he said.
Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Ahmad Luthfi said some 15,000 people affected by the Demak flooding had been relocated to shelters in Kudus.
