PDI-P demands clarity from KPU on district tally halt

A PDI-P legislative candidate has called on the KPU to provide a clear explanation for why vote counting had been suspended at the district level, alleging an attempt at vote rigging to ensure an advantage for a rival party to make gains in the House.

Indonesia Decides

Deddy Yevri Sitorus, the North Kalimantan legislative candidate from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), is demanding an explanation from the General Elections Commission (KPU) on why vote counting has been halted at the district level for the 2024 general election.

"In the regions, there is information that the national KPU has given an order to stop vote counting at the district level, which was not consulted with election participants and the House of Representatives Commission II," Deddy said on Sunday, as quoted by Tempo.co.

Commission II oversees domestic governance, including elections, as well as bureaucratic reform and land reform.

The KPU halted the counting of votes on Sunday because its integrated vote counting and tabulating app, Sirekap, encountered a problem reading data.

Deddy has dismissed this reason as insufficient, however, as the Sirekap app was not the officially approved method of counting actual votes.

He said the official method used a staggered system of counting ballot papers manually and tallying the total votes on the C1 vote tabulation form.

Deddy also pointed out that while the KPU had the authority to halt vote counting, it could only do so in cases of force majeure, such as a natural disaster or a riot.
