A presidential special staffer confirmed that Jakarta remains the capital city of Indonesia until a presidential decree declares the capital relocation to Nusantara Capital City (IKN), following claims that Jakarta had lost its status.
he Presidential Palace has affirmed that Jakarta remains the capital city of Indonesia, following claims suggesting that Jakarta lost its capital city status on Feb. 15.
Presidential special staff for legal issues Dini Shanti Purwono said a transitional provision existed, ensuring Jakarta would retain its capital city function and role until a specific date was determined in a presidential decree.
"As per Article 39 of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) Law, Jakarta remains the capital city until the presidential decree for the relocation is issued," Dini said on Thursday, as quoted by tempo.co.
Dini emphasized that issuing the decree was entirely the President's prerogative.
She referenced Article 41 of the IKN Law, which states that upon the decree’s issuance, provisions other than Jakarta's status as an autonomous region and the provincial administration, would be revoked.
"However, the government will carefully plan the timing to ensure a smooth transition. The aim is to minimize the gap between the issuance of the presidential decree and the enactment of the Jakarta Special Region (DKJ) law," Dini said.
Separately, Ahmad Baidowi, deputy chairman of the House of Representatives’ Legislation Body (Baleg), further clarified the situation.
