President-elect Prabowo Subianto will not disappoint members of his electoral alliance over the allocation of portfolios in the incoming administration, says a senior member of Prabowo’s Gerindra Party, as tussles begin over prized positions in his upcoming cabinet.
resident-elect Prabowo Subianto will not disappoint members of his electoral alliance over the allocation of portfolios in the incoming administration, says a senior member of Prabowo’s Gerindra Party, as the tussle begins over prized positions in his upcoming cabinet.
Discussions between Prabowo and leaders of other political parties in his alliance over the ministerial posts are already underway, Gerindra politician Habiburokhman said, marking the start of a period of lobbying and self-parading to secure seats in the next government.
“We want a cabinet composition that we can rely on to work quickly. So once Prabowo is inaugurated, there will be no time wasted in pursuing our targets and mission,” Habiburokhman said on Tuesday, adding that this included Prabowo’s campaign promises, such as his signature free school lunch program.
“What is clear is that all members of the Onward Indonesia Coalition will be satisfied with the agreed arrangement,” Habiburokhman, who was also a member of Prabowo’s campaign team, noted.
The sitting Defense Minister and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is the eldest son of outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, were announced as the election winners last week. The two other presidential contenders, former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan and former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, are currently challenging the election results at the Constitutional Court and calling for a revote.
Casting himself as the champion of continuity, Prabowo has pledged to carry forward the programs Jokowi had started and to adopt a grand coalition style, a successful strategy that the outgoing President had employed throughout his second term in office.
While the month-long hearing over the election dispute at the court only began on Wednesday, public attention now turns to the formation of Prabowo’s cabinet.
