The Gerindra Party has been teasing the idea of pairing the nephew of party chairman and president-elect Prabowo Subianto, Budisatrio Djiwandono, with the youngest son of outgoing President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, Kaesang Pangarep, for the upcoming Jakarta regional election.
Gerindra senior politician Sufmi Dasco Ahmad posted on Instagram on Wednesday a poster of Gerindra lawmaker Budisatrio and the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) chairman with a text saying Jakarta governor and deputy governor candidates.
Gerindra secretary-general Ahmad Muzani said Budisatrio “is one of [possible] candidates we are currently preparing to lead Jakarta”.
“He has the ability to lead Jakarta better, and [he] cares about people in Jakarta," Muzani told reporters on Wednesday, citing Budistrio’s experience as a two-time lawmaker.
But it remains unclear whether Gerindra will eventually nominate the Budisatrio-Kaesang pair in the Jakarta race in November.
Kaesang, currently aged 29, is too young to run for deputy governor in the November race.
The prevailing 2016 Regional Elections Law sets the minimum age of 30 for running for governor and deputy governor.
