RT Jakarta announced on Thursday afternoon that all commuter services between the Lebak Bulus and Bunderan HI terminals, the only line currently serving passengers, were halted following an incident at a construction project near Blok M Station in which a crane fell onto the train tracks.
In a statement posted on a number of social media outlets, MRT Jakarta blamed the disruption on an incident at a construction site located inside the nearby Attorney General's Office (AGO) headquarters in Blok M, South Jakarta.
"At around [4.40 p.m.], heavy equipment fell on to the tracks from a project managed by PT Hutama Karya," the statement reads, referring to the state-owned construction company managing the project to build a new complex for the AGO headquarters.
The main building of the AGO headquarters caught fire in August 2020, a blaze that was blamed on negligence by low-level staff members.
MRT Jakarta also said in the statement that there were no injuries or fatalities in the incident and that its technical teams were working to restore rail services for passengers.
Responding to the incident, Hutama Karya said that it had launched a clean-up operation at the site of the incident and promised to conduct a probe into what caused the mishap.
"The Hutama Karya project team has immediately begun clearing the scene," said Hutama Karya corporate secretary Adjib Al Hakim.
Adjib added that Hutama Karya apologized to all passengers who experienced disruption to their commute on MRT Jakarta.
MRT Jakarta runs above and below ground and stretches from the center of Jakarta to the southern part of the capital.
The US$1.1 billion line has attracted more than 100 million passengers since it was inaugurated in 2019, according to MRT Jakarta figures.
Construction to extend the current line from Bunderan HI Station to the city's north is ongoing, while an east-west line connecting Jakarta's satellite cities is also planned.
