he United Development Party (PPP) has dismissed the possibility of holding a snap party poll this year, amid growing calls to unseat acting chairman Muhamad Mardiono following the party's crushing defeat in the February legislative election.
The oldest Muslim party in the country lost all its seats in the House of Representatives after failing to secure enough votes in the legislative race for the first time in its history. Some senior members of the party and grassroots supporters pin the blame on Mardiono, who took over party leadership as temporary chairman two years ago. They suggest that the party bring forward a congress to elect a definitive leader this year.
But PPP central board secretary Fernita Jubahar Amirsyah said the congress would be held as scheduled next year, saying the party found no reason to move it to an earlier date. She also cited a June 7 meeting, during which party regional offices reiterated that the congress would be held in 2025.
“This dismisses any suggestions or demands for an earlier congress,” she said on Tuesday, as quoted from Kompas.com.
Leaders of four internal councils of the PPP last month sent a letter to the party central board demanding that next year’s national congress be moved to an earlier date this year – no later than August, advisory council chairman Romahurmuziy, one of the signees, said on Tuesday, Antara reported.
In the letter, they said a caretaker chairman could not hold the position for the full remaining period until 2025, when a congress is scheduled to elect a definitive leader.
