At least 21 people have become victims of wrongful arrest across the country, and nine of them suffered injuries allegedly from being beaten by investigators during interrogation, according to a recent report from Kontras.
The police made up to 15 wrongful arrests in the past year, with some alleged suspects receiving injuries while in the force’s custody, according to a recent report from the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras).
The human rights group published the report on Monday, the 78th anniversary of the National Police, which faces criticism from advocacy groups and the public over reports of wrongful arrests and abuse of power.
During a press briefing at its office in Central Jakarta on Monday, Kontras coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya mentioned that at least 23 people had become victims in the 15 wrongful arrest incidents made by the police since July of last year.
At least nine people were injured in those arrests.
The highest number of cases occurred in October 2023, when there were three incidents. Precinct police offices (Polres) were responsible nine cases, the highest number of any police body.
Among the most scrutinized of the wrongful arrests was a case against four people suspected of being begal (street robbers) in Bekasi, West Java, in 2022. The police allegedly intimidated them until they admitted to committing crimes they did not commit, according to Kontras, which monitored the case.
