N

asDem Party chairman Surya Paloh has said his party will support Bobby Nasution for North Sumatra governor in the November regional elections.

Paloh said the party had yet to discuss the candidate for deputy governor, adding that Bobby should make his own decisions on his running mate.

"Just identify the best candidate and proceed with that," Paloh said recently at the House of Representatives compound, as quoted by Antara news agency.

NasDem says it prioritizes two key factors when supporting candidates in regional elections: capability and electability.

Paloh said the party was open to supporting candidates from outside their pool of members if they were considered the most suitable, including for the Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Bobby has garnered support from multiple parties for his candidacy for governor, including the Golkar Party.

Bobby currently serves as mayor of Medan and is the son-in-law of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

Golkar Party deputy chairman Nurdin Halid insisted that Jokowi had never asked the party to support his son-in-law's candidacy. He said the President would not interfere with the gubernatorial elections in November.

"I'm sure Jokowi will not intervene. Jokowi never asked [the Golkar chairman] to nominate his son-in-law. Never, at all. I guarantee that," he said on the CNN Indonesia’s Political Show on Monday.

In addition to Golkar, Bobby has also received support from the Democratic Party, National Mandate Party (PAN) and Gerindra Party.
