The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is considering three of its own politicians to challenge former member Bobby Nasution’s expected bid for governor of North Sumatra later this year to ensure the heavily favored rival will not be the sole candidate in an uncontested election.
With only months left before Indonesia’s first simultaneous regional elections on Nov. 27, political parties are closing in on candidates they want to back before the deadline to register them with the General Elections Commission (KPU) in late August.
Despite being the second-largest party in North Sumatra and being eligible to field its own candidate pair, the PDI-P has yet to name a candidate to challenge the potential candidacy of Bobby, the incumbent mayor of Medan, who so far has secured early support from all four members of PDI-P’s rival Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM), as well as two other parties.
The KIM was the electoral alliance behind the February victory of president-elect Prabowo Subianto and the vice president-elect, Bobby’s brother-in-law Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who ran against unsuccessful PDI-P candidate Ganjar Pranowo.
PDI-P spokesperson Chico Hakim told The Jakarta Post on Sunday that the party was now considering nominating its own members for the North Sumatra race, including former North Tapanuli regent Nikson Nababan, House of Representatives lawmaker Sofyan Tan and House lawmaker Djarot Saiful Hidayat, who is also a former governor of Jakarta.
“We are a party that always prepares its politicians to become the country’s leaders, so it’s only natural that we prioritize our own members to endorse in the race,” Chico said.
All four members of the KIM – Prabowo’s Gerindra Party, of which Bobby is a member, the Golkar Party which is the biggest party in North Sumatra, the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the Democratic Party – have thrown their support behind Bobby.
