Indonesia Decides

The NasDem Party had decided to endorse Anies Baswedan for reelection as Jakarta governor in November’s regional head elections, a senior party official said on Monday.

"This afternoon, we have made up our minds on [the gubernatorial election for] Jakarta. Pak Surya, who chaired the meeting, immediately named Anies as our candidate for governor of Jakarta," NasDem secretary-general Hermawi F. Taslim said in a press release, referring to a closed-door meeting the party’s chairman Surya Paloh and central board executives held with Anies at the party’s Jakarta headquarters.

Anies, who made a bid for the presidency earlier this year on the NasDem ticket backed by its two partners, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the National Awakening Party (PKB), is not a member of any political party.

He served one term as Jakarta governor from 2017 to 2022, and is eligible for reelection in November.

Speaking to the press after the meeting on Monday, Hermawi said the party also decided to give Anies free reign to choose his running mate, on the condition that he did not pick a NasDem member.

The party has given Anies a deadline of Aug. 22, just five days before candidate registration opens at the General Elections Commission (KPU), to form an electoral alliance and pick his running mate.

“But if it can be [earlier], why not?” Hermawi said.
