With less than a month before election registration is scheduled to open on Aug. 27, former South Sulawesi governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman has secured enough political support after being officially backed by three political parties. He potentially faces Makassar Mayor Mohammad Ramdhan "Danny" Pomanto who also has received support from three other parties in the South Sulawesi gubernatorial election in November.
Two candidate pairs have emerged for the November gubernatorial election in South Sulawesi, with former governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman on one ticket, and Makassar Mayor Mohammad Ramdhan “Danny” Pomanto on the other.
With less than a month before election registration is scheduled to open on Aug. 27, 40-year-old Andi has secured enough political support after being officially backed by three political parties, the NasDem Party, the Democratic Party and the Gerindra Party.
Under prevailing regulations, a gubernatorial candidate must secure the support of a party or coalition of parties holding at least 20 percent of seats in the regional legislature.
In South Sulawesi, a party or coalition must secure at least 17 out of 85 seats available at the local council to endorse a candidate. The three political parties backing Andi together won 24 seats in the February legislative elections, making them eligible to nominate a ticket.
Andi, a politician not affiliated with any political party, led the province from 2022 to 2023 and is known to be the youngest governor in the country’s history. He filled in for Nurdin Abdullah, his running mate in the 2018 regional election, after the latter was implicated in a bribery case.
His running mate Fatmawati served as deputy mayor of the provincial capital Makassar in 2021 alongside Mayor Danny.
On Thursday, Danny said he had received support from the National Awakening Party (PKB), the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the United Development Party (PPP), which occupy a total of 22 seats in the legislative council.
