Indonesia Decides

In an apparent change of tone, president-elect Prabowo Subianto and his Gerindra Party are rallying support to back the Constitutional Court after the House of Representatives attempted to roll back court-ordered changes to the Regional Elections Law and was met with widespread protests.

Tens of thousands of Indonesians took to the streets last week in demonstrations against lawmakers' attempt to pass a controversial revision to the elections law that ignored the court’s rulings.

The revision stood to benefit President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prabowo’s Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM), as it would allow Jokowi’s youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, to run for office in Central Java while also blocking Anies Baswedan from running against the KIM-backed Ridwan Kamil in the Jakarta gubernatorial race.

Prabowo’s Gerindra was among those to have endorsed the revision during a preliminary meeting last week, with a view to pass it into law during a House plenary session on Thursday morning.

But it was also Gerindra executive and deputy House Speaker Sufmi Ahmad Dasco who told the press that lawmakers had decided to drop the revision plan on Thursday night and would abide by court rulings following the protests.

Prabowo, meanwhile, has now denounced politicians whose hunger for power has put their own interests above those of the people.

Speaking at the National Mandate Party (PAN) national congress in Jakarta on Saturday, Prabowo said that politicians and political parties asked for the mandate for power from the people, therefore they must put the people above themselves.
