he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is set to summon Kaesang Pangarep, the youngest son of outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, regarding his use of a private jet following intense scrutiny of his recent lavish trip to the United States.
“The wealth report directorate is scheduling [a summons for Kaesang for clarification],” KPK chairman Nawawi Pomolango said on Tuesday, as quoted by Kompas.
Although Kaesang does not hold any public office, Nawawi said that the KPK has the authority to query his use of a private jet to determine whether it constituted a gratuity related to his family members that hold public office.
Such a query is not a criminal investigation, and improper gifts must be reported to the KPK to avoid criminal charges.
“We don’t see Kaesang as a public administrator. But we do see Kaesang in relation to his family members who hold public office,” Nawawi said.
In addition to Jokowi, other members of Kaesang’s family that hold public office include brother-in-law Bobby Nasution, who is the incumbent mayor of Medan in North Sumatra. Kaesang’s older brother Gibran Rakabuming Raka recently resigned as Surakarta mayor in Central Java to prepare to become vice president in October.
Nawawi said the KPK would not give any special treatment to Kaesang, who chairs the Indonesia Solidarity Party (PSI), a small self-styled youth party.
