The foreign minister thanked Commission I lawmakers for their support in helping Indonesia navigate global challenges at a meeting on Thursday, likely her last before her decade-long tenure ends next month.
Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi thanked lawmakers for working closely with her ministry as her decade-long tenure nears its end.
During a meeting on Thursday with House of Representatives Commission I overseeing foreign affairs, the minister said the legislature had played a key role in helping the country navigate the challenging geopolitical landscape and global conditions.
These included the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing climate crisis and various wars over the past 10 years.
“It has not been an easy 10 years,” Retno told the meeting, probably her last with Commission I.
“Whatever achievements the Foreign Ministry has made so far would have been impossible without your support. I just want to thank you so much,” she said.
A career diplomat who made history as Indonesia’s first female foreign minister, Retno has led the diplomatic corps through dozens of significant events, including Indonesia’s 2022 chairmanship of the Group of Twenty (G20).
She also represented Indonesia at the United Nations for the past decade, voicing the country’s concerns on issues such as the rights of developing nations, the climate crisis and a more inclusive world order.
