Eight retired military and police generals have joined the campaign team of Central Java gubernatorial candidate Ahmad Luthfi, who was nominated by the Gerindra Party-led Onward Indonesia Coalition (KIM).
Luthfi’s campaign team was announced on Saturday, with retired military Lt. Gen. Anto Mukti Putranto at the helm.
Putranto is calling all coalition members to support Luthfi. “This is a mandate by Prabowo Subianto,” he said, referring to the Gerindra chairman.
Joining the team’s board are retired military Gen. Dudung Abdurrachman, Lt. Gen. Bibit Waluyo, Lt. Gen. Bakti Agus Fadjari, Lt. Gen. Nugroho Widyotomo, Maj. Gen. Toto Nugroho, retired police Gen. Sutarman and Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto.
Luthfi was Central Java’s former police chief, and he held the same position in Surakarta city, which outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo calls home. He is running alongside former Central Java deputy governor Taj Yasin Maimoen for the November election.
Luthfi is also known to be a close ally of Jokowi, who will be succeeded by Gerindra patron and president-elect Prabowo Subianto next month.
In July, Gerindra officially endorsed Luthfi as its gubernatorial candidate for the Nov. 27 simultaneous regional head elections, with Prabowo personally selecting him for the role.
