ali is scaling up free rabies vaccinations for domestic, free-roaming and stray dogs amid lagging coverage in the province this year.

Annual vaccinations of dogs can protect them from rabies, decreasing overall cases in the population and helping limit human cases.

Bali has set a target of eliminating rabies deaths in humans by 2030, but provincial secretary Dewa Made Indra noted that about 30 percent of the dog population in Bali has not been vaccinated this year.

There are around 600,000 dogs in Bali, either kept as pets or stray. Many domestic dogs in Bali are allowed to roam around freely.

“To free Bali from rabies, we need a strong commitment from everyone,” Indra said on Sunday during an event in Sanur for World Rabies Day. “People need to pay more attention to their dogs even when they let their dogs roam freely.”

The Bali administration is collaborating with the Bali office of the Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association (PDHI) for the vaccination drive.
