ith just one week left in office, outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo visited his hometown of Surakarta, Central Java over the weekend, where he made his debut in politics nearly two decades ago.
He will end his 10-year presidency after the Oct. 20 inauguration of president-elect Prabowo Subianto, the chairman of the Gerindra Party who won a landslide victory on the back of Jokowi’s tacit support.
In Surakarta on Sunday, Jokowi received Prabowo at his private residence in the Banjarsari subdistrict. Prabowo was picked up at Adi Soemarno airport by vice president-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s older son, and traveled to Jokowi’s residence.
Prabowo left without revealing what he and Jokowi discussed in the meeting – the second such occasion in the past seven days after a Tuesday night dinner at a restaurant in Jakarta when they discussed the transition of power and the continuity of ongoing government programs.
State Secretary Pratikno said the meeting was about “togetherness and continuity”, Antara reported.
News broke of the meeting earlier in the day when Gibran said during a visit to Boyolali regency that Jokowi had invited Prabowo for lunch.
Gerindra’s Surakarta chapter head Ardianto Kuswinarno said that Prabowo specifically asked party members not to accompany him.
