he House of Representatives confirmed retired Army general M. Herindra, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s sole nominee for National Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief, in a hearing held behind closed doors on Wednesday, only days before Jokowi leaves office.
Herindra currently serves as deputy to Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, who will be inaugurated as the next president on Oct. 20.
The decision to appoint Herindra was announced by House Speaker Puan Maharani of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
“The House has just confirmed Herindra as the new BIN chief. This means he is eligible to be inaugurated at any time by incoming president Prabowo after the transition of power,” Puan said.
Prabowo ran on a platform of continuity with vice president-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s eldest son, as his running mate.
