A number of world leaders and foreign officials have congratulated Prabowo Subianto following his inauguration as Indonesia’s eighth president on Sunday in Jakarta.
Leaders from ASEAN countries attended the oath-taking ceremony during the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Plenary meeting on Sunday morning.
Regional leaders in attendance included Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Brunei Darussalam’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Vietnamese Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and Laotian Vice President Laos Pany Yathotou.
Also in attendance were Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck Soo and Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
"I represent the Government of Malaysia in conveying my congratulations and well wishes as my long-time friend Prabowo begins his duties," Anwar said Sunday as quoted by Bernama.
Anwar, whose country is ASEAN chair for 2025, also took the opportunity to express his appreciation to former president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and acknowledged his efforts to maintain strong bilateral relations.
"I congratulate President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on their inauguration in Jakarta today," Marcos Jr. said in a statement posted on social media.
