he Denpasar office of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a warning for high waves in the waters around Bali over the weekend, of up to 2.5 meters in some areas.
“Be cautious of increasing wind speeds and high waves,” said Denpasar BMKG office head Cahyo Nugroho on Friday, as quoted by Antara.
The warning is in effect from Friday to Monday. The agency estimated that the waves would be observed in the southern part of the Bali Strait, the Badung Strait, the southern part of the Lombok Strait and in the Indian Ocean south of the resort island, potentially affecting fishing boats, barges and ferries.
Barge operators were advised to exercise caution if wind speeds exceeded 16 knots or wave heights reached 1.5 meters. Meanwhile, ferries were told to be cautious for wind speeds above 21 knots and wave heights of over 2.5 meters.
The Denpasar weather office previously issued a warning about the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), an intraseasonal tropical climatic variation that may influence the formation of clouds and trigger more rain over Bali. The phenomenon is expected to occur for 30 to 60 days.
“We urge the public to remain vigilant against the impacts of extreme weather, such as floods, landslides and falling trees,” Cahyo said.
The BMKG also issued a warning for potential high waves in the waters of North Sulawesi and its surrounding areas, which is in effect until Saturday.
The waves may reach heights of 1.3 to 2.5 meters in the waters of the Talaud Islands, Sangihe Islands and Sitaro Islands regencies and the southern waters of the province.
