Supporters of Persik Kediri and Arema FC soccer clubs clash at the Kediri-Malang border on Monday evening following a match between the teams.
lashes between supporters of soccer teams Persik Kediri and Arema FC occurred at the Kediri-Malang border in East Java on Monday evening at around 8 p.m.
The incidents took place at two bordering villages: Sukosari village in Kasembon district, Malang regency, and Kandangan village in Kandangan district, Kediri regency.
A video clip of the clash was circulated on social media, showing the situation at both locations.
Earlier on Monday afternoon, Persik Kediri hosted a soccer match against Arema FC at Brawijaya Stadium in Kediri city, with Persik Kediri defeating Arema FC 1-0.
Kasembon Police chief Adj. Comr. Ma’ruf has confirmed that the clashes took place. He said the incidents caused a brief closure of the national road connecting Malang and Kediri.
Police and locals directed travelers to alternative roads to avoid the confrontation.
“The clash took place when several Persik Kediri supporters gathered around Kandangan gas station. Meanwhile Arema FC supporters were [gathering] around the lion statue at Sukosari village, Kasembon district,” Ma’ruf said in text message on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
After questioning the involved supporters, Ma’ruf gathered that the Arema FC fans demanded the return of five fellow supporters detained by the Kediri Regency Police and Kediri City Police.
The Arema FC supporters were detained for breaking the rules which state that the visitors’ supporters were not allowed to come to the host’s ground.
On Dec. 12, five supporters of Persis Surakarta were also detained by the police following a match between the team and Arema FC in neighboring Blitar city.
Supporters from both sides exchanged mockery, but the situation did not escalate to physical altercations.
“There were indeed exchanges of mockery between the supporters after the match. However, the condition was resolved by the police,” Blitar City Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Danang Setiyo PS said in a written statement on Dec. 13.
