The government has agreed with lawmakers to lower the haj costs for this year by around Rp 4 million (US$248) in total, in a move Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said reflected President Prabowo Subianto’s eagerness to reduce the pilgrims’ financial burden.
During a recent meeting between the ministry and the House of Representatives’ special committee on the haj, an agreement was struck to set the costs for the “regular” state subsidized haj scheme at Rp 89.4 million.
Of this figure, pilgrims must foot some 62 percent of the cost, or Rp 55.4 million, while the remainder will be covered through subsidies from the Haj Fund Management Agency (BPKH).
In comparison, the haj cost last year stood at Rp 93.4 million, of which Rp 56 million was paid by the pilgrims themselves.
Nasaruddin lauded this year’s lowered cost as a goal President Prabowo set when his administration assumed office on Oct.20.
