The incident was the latest in a string of extortion scandals to hit the National Police in recent months.
he Semarang Police in Central Java have arrested two of their officers for allegedly shaking down two high school students last week, adding to a growing list of extortion scandals within the National Police in recent months.
Semarang Police chief Sr. Comr. M. Syahduddi stated that the officers, identified only by their initials First Adj. K and Second Adj. RL, are currently being held at the Central Java Police headquarters for a 21-day detention period while awaiting their ethical hearings.
"There is sufficient evidence to suggest that the officers have violated the police code of ethics. They may be dishonorably dismissed from the force if found guilty," Syahduddi said on Sunday, as reported by Kompas.id.
He added that the Semarang Police had launched a criminal investigation into the officers and had named them and a civilian, identified only as S, as suspects in the alleged extortion case.
The three suspects are charged with violating Article 368 of the Criminal Code on extortion, which carries a maximum sentence of nine years in prison.
Syahduddi said the Semarang Police were committed to holding their officers accountable for any violations of the law or the National Police code of ethics.
“As the Semarang Police chief, it is my duty to reform the force and ensure officers fulfill their core responsibility of protecting and serving the people of Semarang,” he said.
