he Tourism Ministry is set to form a task force in collaboration with the Home Ministry to tackle illegal levies and extortion at tourist sites.
"We still need to discuss this with the Home Ministry, but it has already been deliberated," Deputy Tourism Minister Ni Luh “Puspa” Enik Ernawati told Antara news agency in Kota Tua, West Jakarta, on Sunday.
One recent example happened during the Christmas and New Year holidays on Dec. 22.
A guide for an alternative route in Cisarua, Bogor regency, West Java, demanded Rp 850,000 (US$52) from a car driver to escort her on a motorbike to Tugu gas station to bypass the congested Puncak route.
The driver filmed the altercation and posted it on social media, which went viral.
The victim, a resident of Tangerang, Banten, reported the incident to the Cisarua Police.
Following the report, the perpetrator underwent legal proceedings and was given a mandatory reporting sanction along with a strict warning not to repeat the offense.
