rosecutors have demanded a life term for Ukrainian national Roman Nazarenko, 40, accused of orchestrating a clandestine drug laboratory at a luxury villa in Canggu, North Kuta, Bali. The demand was made during a trial at the Denpasar District Court on Thursday.
“Prosecutors ask the panel of judges to find Roman Nazarenko guilty of narcotics offenses and impose life imprisonment,” said prosecutor Ryan Mahendra of the Badung Prosecutor’s Office, addressing the judges led by Eni Martiningrum.
Under Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics, Nazarenko is implicated under multiple articles, including 113(2), 111(1), and 132(1), which carry sentences up to the death penalty, state news Antara reported.

Nazarenko, arrested on Dec. 22, 2024, in Thailand while fleeing, was declared a fugitive after the National Police raided the Canggu lab. The raid resulted in the arrests of his alleged subordinates, Ukrainian brothers Mykyta and Ivan Volovod, who were sentenced to 20 years in jail.
Prosecutors allege Nazarenko oversaw the lab’s operations, while Nazarenko has denied all accusations, online news portal Tempo reported.
Ryan highlighted aggravating factors, including Nazarenko’s alleged disruption of government efforts to eradicate narcotics, danger to future generations and hindrance during trial proceedings, as underpinning the harsh sentence demand.
