alls are growing for the release of two activists in Pati, Central Java, who face up to nine years in prison for “instigating unrest” and “blocking road access” after staging a protest against controversial regent Sadewo.

The activists, Teguh Istiyanto, 49, and Supriyono, 47, who have been leading a movement opposing Sadewo, were arrested on Friday while protesting the failed impeachment of the regent.

The Central Java Police named both men suspects the following day.

Central Java Police Criminal Investigation Department Head Sr. Comr. Dwi Subagio said the two allegedly incited dozens of protesters gathered outside the Pati Legislative Council (DPRD) building to block the Pantura Highway after councilors voted against impeaching Sadewo. The Pantura Highway is one of Indonesia’s busiest routes.

“They were charged with violating Articles 192, 160 and 169 of the Criminal Code,” Dwi said on Wednesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Article 192 concerns the obstruction or destruction of public roads, carrying a maximum sentence of nine years in prison or up to 15 years if the act results in fatalities. Article 160 pertains to inciting unrest, which carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison, while Article 169 deals with participating in a group with criminal intent, which is punishable by up to six years’ imprisonment.
