State asset fund Danantara is nearing its final stage of acquiring land in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, as part of President Prabowo Subianto’s plan to build a dedicated haj village aimed at improving services for Indonesian pilgrims during the pilgrimage season.
Investment Minister and Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani met with Prabowo at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Wednesday to report progress on the project.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rosan said Indonesia had emerged as one of the top-two bidders for a plot of land in the Western Hindawiyah area of Mecca. The neighborhood is located around 2.5 kilometers west of the Al-Haram Mosque, or Grand Mosque, where several haj activities take place.
“There were eight plots on offer in the bidding process, and we chose plot number six because the land is relatively flat,” Rosan said. “I was informed that out of 90 bidders, we have made it into the top two.”
He added that Saudi Arabia does not give land to the highest bidder as in conventional auctions, but instead evaluates each bidder’s development plans, architectural designs and compliance with local regulations. The outcome of the bidding is expected to be announced by late December or January.
“If we secure the land, all of our pilgrims can be properly accommodated in good, decent facilities located close by [the Grand Mosque],” Rosan went on to say. “This will certainly help them focus more on their worship during umrah [minor haj] and haj.”
