he spread of a new strain of the H3N2 influenza A variant called subclade K, commonly referred to as “super flu”, remains under control nationwide, the Health Ministry says, with no indication of increased disease severity as of late December.
According to the ministry’s data, 62 confirmed cases of the new strain have been detected across eight provinces.
Prima Yosephine, acting director for the prevention and control of communicable diseases, said that a global rise of the H3N2 influenza A virus had been observed since the final quarter of 2025 to coincide with winter in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in the United States.
Subclade K, which marks a notable evolution in the H3N2 variant of influenza A, was first identified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in August 2025 and has been reported in more than 80 countries since.
“Assessments by the World Health Organization and available epidemiological data show no increase in disease severity associated with subclade K. Its clinical presentation remains similar to that of other seasonal influenza,” Prima said in a statement on Thursday.
General symptoms included fever, cough, nasal congestion or runny nose, headache, sore throat, fatigue and other common flu-related complaints, she said.
In Asia, subclade K has been detected since mid-2025 in several countries including China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and Thailand. Though it briefly became the dominant strain in some regions, the overall influenza caseload has declined over the past two months.
