A

n island-city administration in an archipelagic province has, of all places, decided to incorporate traffic education into the school curriculum as part of efforts to reduce traffic accidents in the region.

The inclusion of traffic education in school curriculums was one of the police’s crucial achievements presented during the Riau Islands Police’s year-end briefing.

Riau Islands Police chief Insp. Gen. Asep Syafrudin said that his police force had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Batam city administration to integrate traffic education into the junior high school curriculum.

The step was taken because Batam is an economic center with high vehicle mobility.

“This is an exceptional breakthrough. The Batam city administration has accommodated our suggestion to include a traffic curriculum in schools,” Asep said at the year-end briefing on Dec. 30 at the Riau Islands Police headquarters in Batam.

“The aim is clear, to provide early input to the younger generation to understand the meaning of highway safety.”
